aArtworks PaperFor this paper, you will write four full pages on three artworks you choose from the MOMA videos and/or the Ralph Larmann videos at the end of the modules page. Choose three artworks that you are interested in. Browse the videos, watch them, and find artworks that spark your imagination or that you feel you can engage with. If you are interested in the artworks, you will find writing this paper more interesting.You need to follow MLA format. This means everything from your heading to your page numbers to your Works Cited page. Please visit the Purdue Owl website for how to use MLA format. You will be using outside sources to discuss the content of your artworks. You should have one outside source per artwork at least and you cannot use Wikipedia. You can have more outside sources if you want. You can use the information from the videos as your outside sources, but you must tell where you got the information. Anything that is not from you own original thoughts is outside information that must be documented. If you use something word for word from the video, you need to put it in quotation marks. For example, “Picasso painted Girl in a Mirror in 1912.” If you paraphrase something from the video or another outside source you still need to tell where you got it. You put this in the body of your paper as well as at the end on your Works Cited page. Put titles of artworks in italics. You need to use the standard MLA format heading which looks like this:Last name 1NameProfessor KotrlaARTS 1301DateTitle (something creative. Not just “Three Artworks”.Indent (tab) at the beginning of each paragraph. So your paper will begin like this and go on and on like this. Double space the entire paper including your heading. Your heading only goes on the first page. After that, you are just putting your last name and the page number, for example, Smith 2, Smith 3, etc.Begin your paper with an introductory paragraph that mentions the three artworks you will be discussing and state the artists. A paragraph is at least 3-5 sentences. You can also mention something you learned from the assignment or any other pieces of information.Do each of the following for each artwork. Address the first artwork discussing each section one after the other. Then, move on to the next artwork and go through all three and then do the same for your final artwork. Your conclusion paragraph comes after your discussion of all three sections for all three artworks.Start with the subject matter, the subject of the artwork, what you see. Begin each paragraph that addresses each artwork by saying something like, “For my first artwork I chose Girl in a Mirror by Pablo Picasso. (Notice I put the title italics.) It is an oil on canvas painting and was made in 1912.” So you are giving the title of the artwork, the artist, the medium or media (what it’s made of) and the year. Then go on to describe the artwork, what you see, in detail. Mention everything. Nothing is too minor. You need to pretend I have never seen the artwork and can’t see it, so you are creating it in my mind for me in your discussion. Use the Elements and Principles of Art, i.e. color, line, light, texture, etc. These are in the beginning chapters and in the interactive videos in those chapters. Mention at least three of these elements and principles in your discussion and say where the curved lines are in the artwork or where the texture is and what kind, rough, smooth, etc. So, you are giving a physical description of the artwork in this first part and the placement of things as well as their color, lines, shapes, texture, etc. This will probably be 2-3 paragraphs. You begin a new paragraph when you shift to a new idea.Now, for the next part of each artwork you will discuss the content or the meaning or interpretation of the artwork. This is where your outside sources come in. Imagine what the artist could have been trying to communicate. You can use your opinion here, too although you need to back it up with outside sources. Ask yourself what is the message of the artwork? You can agree or disagree with the outside information you find, just explain why you agree or disagree. Make sure you document your outside sources in the body of your paper as well as on your Works Cited page which does not count as one of your 4 pages. Failing to document outside information (information that is not your own) is plagiarism and your paper will fail if you do this. You can also fail the course. This is all outlined in the student handbook under scholastic dishonesty. If you have any questions about how to document your outside sources, ask me, but be sure you have consulted the Purdue Owl website first. It has all the information. Do not just put website URLs in the body of your paper for where you found your information. You need to put the author’s name of the article or the article name. There is also a way to document videos if you use information from them. See Purdue Owl or if that doesn’t help, ask me.Now, in the last section for each of your artworks, you will discuss your own opinions about the artworks, i.e., what you think about each of them, why you chose them. Do not just say I chose it because I like it. Why do you like it? What do you like about it? Also, include whether you think the artist was successful in what he/she was trying to say. Include why you think this.Now you write your conclusion paragraph where you wrap up your ideas and summarize what you have said.Remember, please do not hesitate to ask if you have any questions about any part of this assignment. It counts twice toward your grade, so you want to follow the directions and present a thorough analysis of each artwork.
